Professional Activities

My areas of research specialization include fairy tale studies and adolescent literature. I published the book Fairy Tales Reimagined: Essays on New Retellings in 2009, a collection of critical essays examining contemporary fairy tales in short stories, novels, poetry, and graphic novels. I have published a review essay on fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes's work for Marvels and Tales, a peer-reviewed journal of fairy tale studies.

I have also published a critical essay on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. I have just completed a manuscript titled Beyond His Dark Materials: Innocence and Experience in the Fiction of Philip Pullman and it will be published by McFarland and Company by October 2012. I regularly present papers and chair panels in my specialization areas at NeMLA (Northeast Modern Language Association) conferences; in April I chaired a panel on masculinity in contemporary fairy tales and presented a paper on heroes and anti-heroes in the HBO series The Wire. I have been supported in my research and my conference work through grants earned at Wesley College.

I am currently writing an essay on the film Possession for an anthology of essays on poetry and film that will be published by Scarecrow Press.

I am currently planning a conference panel on The Artemis Archetype in Fiction and Film for the 2013 NeMLA conference and I am writing an essay on a character in a TV series to present at this conference.

I chaired a seminar titled The Artemis Archetype in Fiction, Film, and Television at NeMLA in March 2013. 8 papers were written for the panel, one of which was mine, an essay titled “I’m fighting because I don’t know how to do anything else”: Kara “Starbuck” Thrace as Artemis Archetype.

I also was offered a book contract by McFarland and Company to create an anthology of essays on this topic, and my co-editor Dr. Eileen M. Harney of University of Alaska (Fairbanks) just signed the contract for the book which will be published in 2016. This is my third book.

I write poetry and I serve as the faculty advisor to Musings, the Wesley College Literary Magazine.
