The 9 million dollar EPSCoR RII grant was awarded March 2005. The umbrella organizations for the grant are the University of Delaware {UD) and the Delaware Biotechnology Institute (DBI). The purpose of the RII is to develop an interdisciplinary infrastructure of people, programs, policies, and instrumentation within the broad context of Complex Environmental Systems and Ecosystem Health. The State's four major academic institutions, University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Wesley College, and Delaware Technical & Community College, are involved in RII.
Wesley's goals under the RII are to: (I) enhance the research component of the B.S. in Environmental Studies degree programs; (2) increase the numbers and diversity of students in Environmental Sciences and Policy; (3) integrate social, environmental, and biological science components into courses in the Environmental Sciences and Policy degree program and (4) strengthen K-12 outreach, especially student recruitment.
Access to the statewide network of research and education programs, core instrumentation and facilities is a major factor in achieving these objectives. Through the enhanced research infrastructure provided under RII, Wesley aims to grow the Environmental Science and Policy Programs and enhance the capability of faculty to successfully compete for individual research and education funding at the national level.
The EPSCoR grant provides funding for paid summer internships at Wesley College and at off-site locations. During the academic year, students are able to continue their research. The grant also provides funding for upgrading the computer laboratory, purchasing a van and investing in new field equipment for soil and water research. Undergraduate students have funds available to travel to national meetings.
