Wesley College Nominated for Excellence in Business Award
The Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce nominated Wesley College for an Excellence in Business Award – Corporation of the Year category. The chamber nominated three corporations to compete for votes from other Chamber members. Some of the criteria included having more than 50 employees, creative and imaginative in dealing with the public or business community, growth in either number of employees or an increase in sales dollars, and responsiveness to adversity and creative solutions to resolve them.
“Wesley College, like many institutions of higher education, has been struggling with the economy and the effects on enrollment,” said President William N. Johnston. “We have faced that challenge by increasing funds for scholarships for deserving students; initiating aggressive programs to improve the retention of students and working very hard to attract additional students by providing integrated student services, internships and increasing the number of jobs on campus.”
One example of collaborative planning includes the Streetscape Project, which converts sections of North Bradford, Fulton and Cecil Streets into walkways, plazas and green space to create a more pedestrian-friendly and safer campus. The project combined support from the City of Dover, Student Government Association, the Legislature and others to improve upon the appearance and safety of campus. This project involved cooperation along the way from many groups and organizations and should be complete by the Fall of 2012.
Excellence in Business Award winners will be announced on June 28, 2012 at the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Dinner.
