Wesley College Nursing Program Holds Pinning Ceremony
The Wesley College Department of Nursing held their annual Bachelor of Science in Nursing Pinning Ceremony on Friday May 9 at the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover. During the ceremony 27 students received BSN pins to symbolize completion of their formal nursing program.
The BSN pin is fashioned after the Wesley College crest and contains four symbols. Scalloped shells represent an individual continually seeking new life meanings and opportunities. The Christian cross represents the ideals of faith, hope and love. The ever-burning flame represents continual learning. The open book of knowledge represents the body of information and principles acquired and the wealth of information to be explored in the future.
During the ceremony four students were honored with awards. Rebecca Zimmermann received “The Wesley College Department of Nursing Award.” This award is in recognition of academic scholarship, dedication, and discipline as emulated by the founders of Wesley College.
Patrice Alexandre received “The Keeper of the Light Award.” This award is presented to the student whom their peers feel demonstrates the characteristics of professionalism: altruism, accountability, excellence, duty and honor. Each year the Keeper of the Light passes the light to the next nursing graduates to symbolize the ongoing commitment to uphold the ideals of the nursing profession form one generation of nurses to the next.
Victoria Dunbar received “The Nightingale Award.” This award is presented to the student who represents qualities of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern day nursing. And Brenda Hollingsworth received “The Spirit of Nursing Award.” This award is presented to the graduate who exemplifies the spirit of nursing through community and professional involvement, leadership and academic excellence.
The keynote speaker was Wesley College Director of Learning Resources Christine Jarrell, and class of 2014 students Taylor Mathews and Brenda Hollingsworth also spoke. After the lighting of the lamps ceremony students recited the International Council of Nurses’ Pledge.
