Wesley Professor Co-authors Article

10.02.2012

Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Malcolm D’Souza has recently co-authored a peer-reviewed article with Delaware State University’s Associate Professor of Environmental Chemistry, Dr. Qiquan Wang in the Journal of College Teaching & Learning. The introduction details Wesley College’s transition with the National Institutes of Health DE-INBRE program, describing the many hardships first encountered with the expansion of student and faculty involvement in mentored undergraduate research. The article then explains at length, the partnership created between Wesley College and Delaware State University (DSU) in establishing the Wesley College B.S. in Biological Chemistry program and the results achieved on obtaining a seed grant from the Delaware National Science Foundation Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DE-NSF-EPSCoR). In Cannon Hall, the Wesley College Science & Math building, federal funds have now provided for an increase in modernized research spaces, cyber infrastructure improvements, laboratory upgrades and equipment, a certified chemical safety officer (CSO), among other things. The collaboration between Wesley College and DSU has also allowed students to take classes on both campuses. These courses help students get better prepared for the competitive fields of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and chemical industries; medical programs; and in various research and government agencies.
