Wesley Staff Member Receives Award
Wesley College Alcohol Education Coordinator Melissa Elliott received an award from the State of Delaware’s Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health on June 11 during the Delaware Prevention Advisory Council meeting. She was recognized for her efforts in establishing creative alternative activities for Wesley students using the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG). The College is one of eleven organizations in the state that receive the grant.
There were two activities celebrated at the ceremony. The first was Art Night, which took place monthly during the school year. At these events, students would participate in exercises including art instruction courses, t-shirt decorating, pumpkin painting, designing holiday ornaments and crafting glass vases.
"These events proved to be very popular for students and many described them as a great way to relax and be creative," Elliott said.
Taste Lounge Mocktail Mixers were also acknowledged. Like the Art Nights, these took place once a month. In addition to serving students frozen mocktail drinks, each mixer had an educational aspect. Topics included alcohol and drug abuse, stress management and sexual health.
