Demetrius Stevenson distinctly remembers hearing the voice of Wesley coach Mike Drass as it thundered across the field before practice during his time as a defensive tackle during the mid-1990s. “You don’t walk on my field!” Now that field will bear the veteran coach’s name when the Delaware school dedicates the playing surface of Scott D. Miller Stadium to the veteran coach before their game against Christopher Newport on Saturday. Mike Drass Field.

Understandably, Mike Drass is a little embarrassed by the words. There’s not too many football coaches who go to work every day on a field named for them. But the veteran Wesley College football coach is also grateful to the people who honored him by naming the playing surface in Miller Stadium after him. The words ‘Drass Field’ were painted along both sidelines when a new artificial surface was installed a few months ago.

As far as we know, Wesley College’s 73-4 home-field record at Scott D. Miller Stadium is the best performance ever on a FieldTurf football field. “We probably had the worst grass field in college football in 2003,” says Mike Drass, athletic director and head football coach at the Division III liberal-arts college in Dover, Del., acknowledging that weather conditions in that state can be difficult and unpredictable. “Since 2004, when we put FieldTurf in, we’ve had great success.” And how!...
